Glossary

Key terms used across the WhatIF documentation.

Scenarios & Execution

Scenario

A simulation setup that defines the rate changes to be evaluated against a Book of Business. A scenario specifies a product, rate plan, Book of Business, rate table modifications, and scenario name. Once executed, the platform re-rates every policy in the Book of Business using the Rating Engine and produces analytical reports from the results.

Execution Status

The current state of a scenario in the WhatIF platform. Supported statuses are:

StatusDescription
SavedThe scenario has been configured and saved but not yet executed
RunningExecution is in progress
ExecutedAll policies were processed successfully and reports are available
Partial ExecutedSome policies were processed successfully; others failed. Reports are available for successfully processed policies
FailedNo policies were processed. Reports are not available

Environment

A configured target system that WhatIF connects to for scenario execution and rating. Environments represent deployment targets such as Development, QA, Staging, or Production. Each environment specifies a host address, product mapping, and authentication settings. A Default Environment is automatically selected when users create new scenarios.

Environment Health Check

A validation check that confirms an environment is reachable and operationally ready before scenario execution. It verifies connectivity, deployment accessibility, and system responsiveness. A passing health check confirms the environment is available but does not guarantee a scenario will execute without errors.

Pricing & Premiums

Charged Premium

The premium currently associated with a policy in the selected Book of Business; what policyholders are paying under their existing policy terms. Used as the baseline for measuring premium displacement.

Current Premium

The premium calculated by re-rating policies under the currently active rate plan, with no proposed changes applied. Represents what the current rate structure produces if all policies were re-rated today.

Proposed Premium

The premium calculated after applying the rate changes configured in a scenario. Compared against Charged and Current Premium to measure the impact of the proposed rate change.

Premium Delta

The difference between two premium states, either Proposed vs Current or Proposed vs Charged, expressed as a monetary value or percentage. Represents the financial impact of the rate changes configured in a scenario.

Premium Displacement

The net financial effect of applying proposed rate changes to a Book of Business. Measured as the movement from Current Premium to Proposed Premium across the portfolio.

Rate Table

A structured set of rating factors used by the Rating Engine to calculate premiums. Scenarios are built by selecting a rate table as the rating basis and applying modifications, such as bulk adjustments or inline edits, to specific rate table entries.

Rating Engine

The external system that calculates premiums for each policy in a scenario. WhatIF submits rating requests to the Rating Engine in parallel across the Book of Business and collects the responses for analysis. WhatIF does not replace or modify the Rating Engine; it orchestrates calls to it.

Books of Business

Book of Business

A saved portfolio definition that determines which policies a scenario runs against. Created by applying filters, such as Effective Date Range, State, Writing Company, Vehicle Type, and Agency Code, against the in-force policy data in the Data Platform. A Book of Business can be reused across multiple scenarios for the same product and rate plan, ensuring scenarios are compared against an identical policy population.

Analytics & Reporting

KPI Profile

A saved configuration of analytical dimensions and reporting attributes used to segment and filter scenario results. KPI Profiles are created in the KPI Builder and can be reused across multiple scenarios and reports for the same product. A Default KPI Profile is automatically applied when a report is generated.

KPI Builder

The interface within WhatIF used to create and manage KPI Profiles. Supports four profile types, Risk Insights, Rate Insights, Coverage Insights, and Policy Insights, each configuring different analytical dimensions for portfolio analysis.

Analysis Configuration

An administrator-managed configuration that defines the analytical report structure used for KPI analysis within WhatIF. It maps products, risks, coverages, rate items, and dimensions into reusable report configurations that drive slice-and-dice analysis and premium displacement reporting.
